Pattachitra Art

History & Origin:

Pattachitra is a traditional scroll painting style from Odisha and West Bengal, known for its intricate detailing, vibrant natural colors, and storytelling themes. The word Pattachitra is derived from "Patta" (cloth) and "Chitra" (painting), signifying paintings done on fabric or dried palm leaves.

This art form dates back over a thousand years, flourishing under royal patronage in Odisha's Puri, Raghurajpur, and Dandasahi regions. Historically, Pattachitra paintings were closely associated with temple traditions, festivals, and storytelling performances, with artisans—known as Chitrakars—creating elaborate narrative paintings depicting cultural stories, deities, and daily life.

With time, the art form expanded beyond its traditional religious context, finding its way into home décor, fashion, and contemporary lifestyle products while maintaining its core aesthetic and hand-painted precision.

How It Is Made:

The making of Pattachitra involves a meticulous, labor-intensive process:

  1. Preparation of the Canvas – A cotton cloth is coated with a mixture of chalk powder and tamarind seed gum, then polished with stone to create a smooth surface.

  2. Sketching & Outlining – Artists use fine bamboo brushes to sketch intricate designs with black natural ink.

  3. Coloring – Traditional mineral-based pigments (made from stones, flowers, and organic elements) are used for bold and striking hues.

  4. Final Detailing – The painting is finished with delicate border work, intricate patterns, and shading techniques.

  5. Sealing & Preservation – Once completed, the painting is sun-dried and coated with lacquer for durability.
